Sizes from Word, InDesign and print specs have to become CSS pixels for the web. A 12 pt body font is 16 px, which is the browser default.
Not every system uses 72 points to the inch: TeX uses 72.27. Also remember that 1 pica is 12 points, so do not confuse picas with points.
The desktop publishing point is exactly 1/72 of an inch, as set by PostScript. CSS keeps that relationship and defines 1 px as 1/96 of an inch.
Multiply points by 1.333 (96 ÷ 72). For example, 12 pt is 16 px and 18 pt is 24 px.
