Unit-To-Unit Temperature conversion

Fahrenheit to Kelvin

1 °F = 255.93 K

This runs through Celsius: subtract 32, multiply by 5/9, then add 273.15. Room temperature of 68 °F is 293.15 K.

Formula K = ((°F − 32) × 5/9) + 273.15

Mental-math shortcut

Convert to Celsius first, by subtracting 32 and multiplying by 5/9, then add 273.15.

Where this conversion comes up

Scientific and engineering formulas use kelvin, but US sources quote temperatures in Fahrenheit. A room at 68°F is 293.15 K.

Common mistakes

Do not add 273.15 straight to a Fahrenheit figure. A step of 1 K equals 1.8°F, so the scales differ in size as well as zero point.

Background

Daniel Fahrenheit proposed his scale in 1724, and Lord Kelvin proposed the absolute scale in 1848. Absolute zero is -459.67°F.

Kelvin has no degrees. 300 K is 26.85°C, which is 80.33°F.

Frequently asked

What is 1 °F in Kelvin?
1 °F = 255.93 K. In the other direction, 1 K = -457.87 °F.
What is the Fahrenheit scale?
The Fahrenheit scale sets water’s freezing point at 32 and its boiling point at 212, giving 180 degrees between them. It remains the everyday scale in the United States and a handful of territories.
What is the Kelvin scale?
The kelvin is the SI base unit of thermodynamic temperature, starting at absolute zero. It shares Celsius’ degree size, so a rise of 1 K is a rise of 1 °C. Values are written without a degree symbol.
What is 68°F in kelvin?
68°F is 293.15 K.
